Andrew and I met in late 2006 in Amsterdam. We were introduced by a mutual friend and collector who was keen to put us in touch given that Andrew at the time was planning on returning to Australia. We met in my favourite Amsterdam café “Morlang” and spent the afternoon chatting about, well… art of course. During our conversation, the perennial topic of the Archibald prize and who would be good to paint came up. Many names were passed around and when I tongue in cheek suggested Eddie McGuire, Andrew exclaimed that he had never heard of him! Andrew had been living in Europe for a long time and was a little bit out of the loop with popular culture down under…
Andrew has lived in Paris (and later in Amsterdam) for over a decade and moved back to Melbourne in early 2007. His work has been exhibited in galleries in Paris and elsewhere in France and also in New York and Amsterdam.
Straight away upon seeing his work, I was blown away by his monumental abstract landscapes. Using exquisite pigments and created with numerous layers of paint, using brushes, spatulas and rags, Andrew’s paintings are a bold and colourful affirmation of the Australian and European landscape.
